Day 8: The new calendar user interface
Lights-Out 2.0 introduces a completely redesigned, new calendar. We will look at all the new calendar functions in the next 4 days of our step-by-step series. Let’s start first with an overview on the new calendar user interface.
Open the Management console or Dashboard. Then click on the tab “Calendar”.
Calendar user interface
There is a navigation bar on top of the calendar. Click on (1) to switch between the 4 different views: Day, week, month and timeline view. Use (2) to navigate forth and back in the selected view. And click on (3) to jump to today, this week or month (depends on the view).
As a result, you see a month and week view:
And a day and timeline view:
In month view, all entries have the same, fixed size. In week, day and timeline view, the size reflects the actual amount of time used. This may result in a thin line if your schedule only takes a few minutes. In this case switch to month view for easier editing.
Creating new items
To create a new calendar item either
- double click in the free area of a calendar view. If you double click in a user calendar group, this group is then preselected. More on groups shortly.
– or –
- click on the calendar task “Add new item to calendar”
The Edit schedule dialog opens. There are 3 areas where you must enter data, the fourth is optional.
(1) the affected group or device
(2) a start point in time and optionally a start action
(3) an end point in time and optionally an end action
(4) an optional description for you
Editing existing items
- Either double click the entry in calendar
– or –
- Select the entry with a single click
- Click on the calendar task “Edit selected item”
If the selected item belongs to a series (a recurring event), you have to decide if you want to edit the single item or the series:
Be careful if you open a single occurrence of a series. Any change will detach this item from the series and create an independent event. This can lead to unwanted and hard to find results.
Deleting items
- Either open the item for editing (see above) and then click the button Delete
– or –
- Select the entry with a single click
- Click on the calendar task “Delete selected item from calendar” or press the DEL key on the keyboard.
If the entry belongs to a series, this removes the whole series.
Summary
Today we introduced the new calendar user interface. In the next posts, we will create schedules for the server and client computers. We will explain in detail what you can do with start and end actions and how you can build complex schedules.
Here you will find the complete list of all days of our step-by-step series.
