Day 21: Using Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE
This blog post continues on the backup topic of our step-by-step series. Today we look at Veeam Endpoint Backup Free. This is a free, proven third party backup solution.
Key features of Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE
Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE stores files and folder or disk images on (external) disks or file shares. Cloud backup is not supported. A currently connected backup disk is visible and endangered by ransomeware. A bit of protection is available with an automatic disk ejection after a successful backup job and disk rotation. You can create and run one backup job with multiple external drives.
You can easily restore single files and folders or entire disks. Bare metal restore is possible via boot from rescue media (Windows PE based, USB stick, CD/DVD or backup disk itself).
Lights-Out support
Lights-Out fully supports Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE and detects it automatically. If you add a schedule to your backup job(s), Lights-Out is not able to retrieve the schedule because it is not using Windows Task Scheduler. It does, however detect that a backup is running. We recommend to not use the Veeam scheduler, instead schedule the backups with Lights-Out.
Finally, Lights-Out adds some additional benefits to Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE.
- Especially relevant: Lights-Out can start your server from standby or hibernation and your clients from shut down, standby or hibernation to run a backup!
- You can configure and execute an action after backup. As a result, is it easy to save energy after a backup.
- Lights-Out reports backup state, result and the point in time for the next backup if scheduled with Lights-Out!
Summary
Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE provides basic protection of your valuable data. Its strength is the easy restore and the good support of boot media. Lights-Out as companion, gives you some additional features to better save energy without the risk of data loss.
Tomorrow we will look at Cloudberry Backup.
