Day 23: Using Lindenberg Software Backup

This blog post continues on the backup topic of our step-by-step series. Today we look at Lindenberg Software Backup, a new innovative backup solution. Joachim Lindenberg is a well-known forum member of the German Home Server Blog.

Key features of Lindenberg Software Backup

Lindenberg Software Backup stores entire disk images on a backup server. The disk image is stored as a standard vhd disk. Hence you can easily mount the vhd image to restore files or spin up a virtual machine. Lindenberg Software Backup saves client backups on the server without the requirement for a VPN. This is a feature I really like myself. My kids who are studying or doing an internship can run incremental backups over the internet. That’s not easily possible with Windows Server Essentials backup. And finally, Lindenberg Software Backup separates between different users while allowing a restore of files and folders without the need for administrative rights. If you do not share the backup disk on the server, you also get a good protection against ransomeware.

Simply select a disk with enough space to store the backup files. Here we use disk drive e:

Client configuration

Configure server access and authentication, then select the drive you want to backup and optionally add a schedule (you can leave that part to Lights-Out by the way).

This third-party backup solution is not yet finished but worth a try.

Lights-Out support

Lindenberg Software Backup was built with Lights-Out in mind. Therefore, it integrates very well into Lights-Out. It’s fully supported and automatically detected by Lights-Out. You can use it for server and client backups. With Lights-Out, you get some additional benefits:

• Especially relevant: Lights-Out can start your server from standby or hibernation and your clients from shut down, standby or hibernation to run a backup!
• You can configure and execute an action after backup. As a result, is it easy to save energy after a backup.
• Lights-Out reports backup state, progress (!), result and the point in time for the next scheduled backup
